    What is an invoice?

An invoice is an itemized document a seller sends to a customer to request payment for goods or services. It records what is being charged, the amount, the payment terms and the parties involved.

    What does an invoice do?

An invoice connects a payment request to a transaction. A customer can compare the work or products with what was agreed, check the amount and identify the payment reference. The seller can use that same reference to organize billing records.

For example, a designer who has delivered a logo package might issue an invoice for the agreed project price. The description identifies the package; the reference distinguishes it from other work for that customer.

    What information belongs on it?

    • Seller and customer names and relevant contact information.
    • An invoice reference and the date it was issued.
    • A description of the goods or services, with quantities and rates.
    • The total, currency, due date and payment instructions.
    • Any transaction-specific tax details or additional references that apply.

An invoice is different from an estimate

An estimate describes a proposed cost before the final charge is established. An invoice asks for payment on the basis of the actual agreement. If the agreed scope changes, update your records so the payment request matches what the customer approved.

An invoice is also different from evidence of payment. Issuing the document does not mean that the customer has paid it. Keep the bank or payment-provider confirmation separately.

When do you send an invoice?

The timing follows your agreement: after completing work, at an agreed milestone or for an agreed advance. There is no single schedule that suits every transaction. Confirm expectations before work begins and put an explicit due date on the document.

For recurring client work, identify the period covered. A description such as “October website maintenance” is more useful than an unexplained “Services” charge.

Make one without starting from a blank page

Go Invoice Maker provides the document layout, line items and preview. Enter your own information, select a language and currency, and download the result. The builder does not send emails, check payment status or submit tax filings.

Before sending, check the details against the transaction. A polished template helps readability, but correct names, amounts and payment instructions are what make the document useful.
